#52, #77: The make up challenge is on

Off to work with a quasi full face of make up. Plus the most important part - lipstick!
The make up challenge is on.

I am over my look. I always do the same old look. I have been doing this look for about 10 years. Liquid Eyeliner to the edge of my eyes, quick brush of powder and some mascara. 5 minutes max and I am done.

I am bored with it. I see all these beautiful girls on the train, wearing simple but stunning make up and I am in awe. I often want to go up to them and ask them how they do their make up, especially how they do their eye liner.

Therefore I thought I would put the challenge to myself and add it to the Life List. #52 'Wear Lipstick over consecutive days (preferably a shade of red)' and #77 'Learn how to put a full face of make up on'.

People laugh when they read #52 - 'wear lipstick'. However I never wear lipstick... EVER. The last time I wore it for a full day and reapplied it more than once was for my wedding.

I look at people that wear lipstick with such jealously. I feel so self-conscious when I wear lip stick. I always think I look like (to put it bluntly) an 'Eastern Block Lady of the Night' when I wear it. Especially when it is a shade of red. Maybe I was scared off after an embarrassing Revlon ColourStay lipstick incident back when I was a teenager? Who knows. But I have always felt uncomfortable wearing lipstick.

I also never wear eye shadow or blush and never wear foundation other than some powder.

But this will change.

As I have mentioned before, I have a big girl crush on Zooey Deschanel at the moment and absolutely love how she does her makeup. So I am going to try to make an effort and stick to this LL challenge.

Day 1
Eyes - Today I changed my usual eyeliner look. I watched a lot of YouTube tutorials to figure out how to do 'snake eyes' and I think I did a decent job of getting it right. But I will keep on practising. I currently use Rimmel's Liquid Eye Liner but I recently bought Maybelline's Lasting Drama Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner. I am still getting used to using the gel.

Lipstick - I have bought some new lipsticks. The one I am loving at the moment is Napoleon Devine Goddess Lipstick in Athena. Supposedly this lipstick is "perfect for daytime looks and compliments bold eyes". I know it isn't a shade of red, but it is a good first step and I don't feel that self conscious when I wear it. I just need to get the courage up to wear the Andromeda shade to work now. (Note: did not reapply the lipstick at all, so only lasted fora bout 2 hours, need to work on this)

Foundation - I still use Napoleon's Camera Finish Powder Foundation Look 2 but after all the RAVE reviews I have also started to use Garnier's BB cream Miracle Skin Perfecter. But I need to find a better foundation for my skin that stays on and doesn't fall off by the end of the day.

Mascara - I am currently OBSESSED with MAC's Haute and Naughty Lash Mascara. It makes my eyes look (ever so slightly) that I have false eye lashes. However you just need to be careful as the lashes can clump up and look a bit scary if you put too much product on.

Eye Shadow - I think this will be the hardest to wear on a daily basis for me. However I have 3 types of eye shadows in my make up kit that I need to start wearing Napoleon's loose eye dust in Star Light, MAC eye shadow in Haux and Bloom's Eye Shadow in Whisper. I just need to figure out how to apply it properly and which shades look best when.

Below is my current must have make up items:

My ultimate aim would be to get the look of the eyes below and emulate Zooey Deschanel's look.

To get some help along the way, I am booked in with a make up artist at Napoleon to learn how to apply a full face of make up myself. I am really looking forward to learning how to actually do my make up properly and pick up some tips and tricks along the way.

I will keep you posted of my progress.

PS - this post is not in any way sponsored by Napoleon (although I wouldn't mind if it was). There is a Napoleon store on my way to the train station near work and I often pop in to the store to have a look and more often than not leave with something! I also think he does quite good products.

  1. I Loooove Napoleon too. I can't wait to see your results. I am in need of a make up update but that usually occurs in November for my birthday.
